Growing Spiritually is Growing in the Knowledge of God

In Jeremiah 9:24, the Lord tells Jeremiah, “Let the one who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me.”

The Lord tells Jeremiah in the previous verse that even though we can know lots of things about lots of things, the most important thing is to know and understand Him!

Verses That Emphasize the Need for Scripture for Growing Spiritually

In our journey toward spiritual growth, it becomes clear that the Bible holds a unique and irreplaceable role. The Scriptures consistently emphasize that true spiritual growth is intricately tied to the Word of God.

Attempting to pursue spiritual understanding in any other way is akin to the actions of a thief or a robber.

The Bible serves as our guide, offering wisdom, insight, teaching, and spiritual nourishment.

Any deviation from its truths will lead us astray.

The Bible stands as an indispensable source, guiding us on the path to spiritual maturity in our walk with God.

Scriptures That Emphasize Growing in Love, Faith, & Character

They highlight the importance of developing love, faith, and character in our lives. As we grow in godly virtues, we are transformed into the image of Christ.

    21. And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you ( 1 Thes 3:12).

    24. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:5-8 ESV).

    25. For those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers (Rom 8:29).

    Scriptural Growth Analogies

Jesus often talked about spiritual growth using examples & analogies.

For example, our lives are a bit like plants. Plants grow from seeds to maturity and are able to bear fruit.

As we grow, the Word of God sprouts and flourishes inside us until we mature and bear good fruit.

Here are a few verses with plant analogies:

    26. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience (Luke 8:15 ESV).

    27. The righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green” (Ps 92:12-14 ESV).

    28. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor (1 Cor 3:2-8).

    We Grow Spiritually Through Troubles

There are also Bible verses that emphasize that spiritual growth can come through facing and overcoming trials and troubles.

These verses convey the idea that trusting God in difficult circumstances can lead to spiritual growth.

The growth process shapes us into more mature and resilient believers. The process strengthens our faith and matures our character.

    29. My fellow believers . . . For you know that when your faith is tested it stirs up in you the power of endurance. And then as your endurance grows even stronger, it will release perfection into every part of your being until there is nothing missing and nothing lacking (James 1:2 TPT).

30.”Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4 NIV).

    31. “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 5:3-4 (NIV).

Spiritual Growth Verses that Emphasize Christian Maturity

These spiritual growth verses underscore the point that we are not to remain in the same condition as when we started out in our Christian journey.

We are to go forward in pursuing Christian maturity. We are to grow in our connection with God and develop our thinking and character as true followers of Christ

    32. Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature (1 Cor 14:20).

    33. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways (1 Cor 13:10-12).

    34. Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God (Heb 6:1).

As We Abide in Christ He Will Work In Us

Sometimes it can feel like a winter season where nothing is happening in our spiritual walk.

However, these times can mean the most growth for our inward person.

It’s nice to know God oversees our growth, and like the rose, under the snow, we will blossom again.

These next verses show that as we depend on Him, God enables our growth and will complete what He started in us.

    37. For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure (Phil 2:13).

    38. “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

    39. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit (2 Cor 3:18).

    40. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Phil 1:6).
