Awareness of God's Presence

Why You Might Not Be Aware of God’s Presence

Indicators That Show You Are Asleep or Awake

Learn to experience a deeper awareness of God’s presence with these indicators that reveal if you are truly awake or asleep.

How I Stumbled Upon a Deeper Awareness of God’s Presence

I have been a Christian since I was a child.

Yet, it was not until I was in my thirties that I awoke to a deeper experience of God’s presence.

I had decided to take time each morning for prayer and reading the Scriptures when I began to experience an internal kind of goose-bumpy feeling, but not a fear goose-bumpy feeling.

It was immense peace and love. I would describe it, as Charles Finney did long ago, as “liquid love.”

In all the years of being a Christian, I had learned about God and experienced His presence in many ways.

I knew Him in my baptism and salvation, worship, prayer, and even intercession.

These were all precious moments, but not sustained daily experiences.

I had heard people talk about “practicing the presence” of God and “abiding in Christ,” as you may have too.

But I did not fully understand what it all meant.

However, with this new experience of God’s love being stirred in my heart, I was awakened to a deeper stirring of His presence.

Awakening to a Deeper Awareness of God’s Presence

Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you (Ephesians 5:14).

Many people live their entire lives unaware of God’s glorious presence.

Perhaps some people will turn toward Him occasionally, yet most people have little, if any, awareness of His presence.

It is as if people go through life without being truly awake spiritually.

It is easy (even for Christians) to go through life and not wonder about their relationship with their Creator Father, or the meaning of life and spiritual things.

Most people spend years growing and learning how to function in the physical world, and yet may have not recognized the need to develop their personal spirits.

It is as if they are spiritually asleep.

From the beginning, God created us as human beings, spirit, soul, and body.

We spend all our lives learning about the physical world, our minds, and our emotions, yet we neglect to learn about our inner spirit being.

Many of us are spiritually asleep.

Just as our bodies sleep through the night, and the outside world continues; so also the spiritual world continues, even if we are unaware of it.

It surrounds us each moment like the air we breathe and presents us with new opportunities to connect with God throughout our day, whether we recognize them or not.

What we need is to learn how to recognize these opportunities.

Indicators Your Spirit is Asleep

All Christian believers are awakened to God enough to believe in Jesus for salvation.

However, there is a deeper level of awareness of His presence for which we can all aspire.

We can keep in mind that each person possesses an individualized spiritual and emotional temperament and may experience God in different ways.

And some people may have areas where they are fully awake, and areas where they are asleep.

Some people may slip in and out of cycles of sleepiness and alertness.

However, the following are some indications your personal spirit is slumbering in some way to God’s deep-dwelling abiding presence.

  • Believers whose personal spirits are slumbering may know God is present in corporate worship by faith, but do not experience His love in an intensely personal way.
  • They will say, “I believe God is aware of our worship, but I have never experienced what you are talking about.”
  • In prayer, they are unable to sustain continuing communication because prayer feels dry and dull and their mind wanders.
  • Personal Scripture reading for the less awake person becomes cognitive reading or study without the quickening breath of God speaking through the Scriptures.
  • Such persons may feel a flicker of God’s presence for a moment but are unable to stay and rest in His presence and are distracted by many things.

These indicate their personal spirit is not awake enough to experience the reality of God’s abiding presence.

Indicators You Are Awakened to God’s Presence

  • Those believers who have awakened to God’s presence in a deeper way, feel Him moving in their personal spirits.
  • God quickens their personal spirits and enables spiritual worship (John 4:23-24).
  • They learn to entertain His presence more as they commune daily with the Spirit of God.
  • In times of private prayer and devotion, the person with a more awakened personal spirit can read Scripture, pray, and worship with a real sense of refreshing, strengthening, and love in Jesus Christ’s presence.
  • These ones can enjoy a quiet devotional time, because their personal spirit can soar, unimpeded by the demands and distractions of other people.
  • Their senses are heightened by being surrounded by His love.
  • True worship in the Spirit becomes a reality. This environment can be a rewarding time of worship and intimacy with the Lord.
  • Believers who have awakened personal spirits grow toward more security in their inner person and learn to relax and focus on time spent alone with God.

There are obviously different personality types, yet even the extrovert can enjoy the awareness of God’s presence in silence.

We were all created to enjoy the refreshing rest and peace of God’s personal presence.
