What is my purpose? What is my purpose in God? Christ? Focus on my purpose.

3 Keys to Find & Fulfill My Divine Purpose

You can find & fulfill your divine purpose when you understand these 3 keys!

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

1. Begin to Focus on Purpose

We have a friend who is a cattle rancher. When he first bought his land, many years ago, he couldn’t drive onto it until he first built a bridge over a ravine.

So, as a creative young rancher back in the day, he bought a cheap flatbed train car to serve as a bridge over the ravine.

Even today, driving over the top of that train car is the only way to get onto his property.

I was frightened the first time I drove over the top of it, but he told me,

“Don’t look at your car. Don’t think about where your tires are. Look to the end. Look up ahead. Focus your eyes farther up ahead where you are going.”

I made it safely across without ending up at the bottom of the ravine, and so have cattle cars, feed trucks, and construction equipment through the years.

However, I did learn a valuable lesson about the importance of keeping my focus on the goal ahead.

It seems to me many people lose sight of the most important goal in life and get sidetracked, and some end up in the ditch.

Then, on the other hand, some of us feel like we could probably stay focused if we were positive about what to stay focused on.

Are you focused on the most important thing?

Do you know what to focus on?

Are you sure?

Hear me for a minute.

2. This is Your Main Purpose in Life

All of us desire to live a purposeful and fulfilling life. We want to know our life matters to the world.

This is not a new phenomenon. All humanity has searched for significance since sin destroyed the ideals God set out for human life in the Garden of Eden.

Bible scholars combed the Bible to find humanity’s main purpose in life.

They summarized their answers in what is called The Westminster Shorter Catechism.

The very first question asks,

“What is the chief end of man?”

The answer states,

“Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.”[1]

When I read this summary, something inside my heart jumped.

Enjoy Him! Think about this for a moment.

God is God. He was not required to create you, but He chose to create you so you could enjoy friendship with Him.

God loves you and enjoys your friendship!

The prophet Isaiah writes that we were made by God’s love and for God’s glory (Isa 43:7).

Moses taught the Israelites, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might” (Deut 6:5).

And in Matthew 22:37, Jesus calls this the greatest commandment of all.

?So, we could say that our purpose in life is this special love relationship with God—to love Him completely and enjoy His presence of love.

2. We Find Our Purpose In His Presence

To choose to love God brings enjoyment because in His presence is fullness and joy.[2]

His presence heals our deepest hurts and fears.

And in His love we experience the fullness of life we were intended to have in the Garden of Eden.

From this love relationship of knowing God intimately, He fully provides all we need for life.

Dear reader, when I discovered this revelation, my life became a lot simpler and more peaceful.

I stopped worrying about whether I was fulfilling my purpose or not.

And I stopped striving to live by every jot and tittle of religious rules, and I relaxed.

I began to learn how to love Him and enjoy His presence of love.

All of the striving to do this and that activity, all of the overwhelm and pressure, all of it was swept away when I learned to love Him in return for His love.

Friend, God loves you and longs for you to love Him back!

Even when we feel our love is inadequate, we don’t have to worry, because God gives us His love to love Him with!

My friends, our main purpose in life is to love God and enjoy His love!

You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever (Psalms 16:11).

What is my purpose? Focus on My Purpose. What is my purpose in God?

3. Your Secondary Purpose Flows from Your Primary Purpose

From this main purpose—to love Him and enjoy His love—automatically flows our secondary purpose.

Our secondary purpose, as a beloved royal child of God, is to function as God’s family representative on earth.

We can see earthly examples of this when we look at the Queen of England and her family. Her royal children function as the royal representatives of the Queen.

So it is with our Father the King of Kings.

As we grow in our relationship with Him and get to know His wishes, we begin to carry out His desires on earth through our jobs, callings, and assignments.

In all of this, He is delighted and glorified!

Friends, our secondary purpose is not a one-time discovery!

It flows from our talents, gifts, and abilities. It grows and develops through our life.

Even though our jobs, callings, and assignments may change, our primary purpose to love Him and enjoy His love never changes.

This principle is both grounding and freeing.

For me, there is tremendous comfort in knowing that in the middle of life’s pressures.

I can step back into God’s embrace and know I am fulfilling my purpose simply by loving Him!

I trust this revelation will be freeing for you as well!

Are You Focused on Your Purpose?

Right now is a strange time in history for most of us. The Covid pandemic has changed how we do life and church.

God is shaking our world on purpose so that all the things which can be shaken will be shaken and removed, but the unshakeable things will remain.[3]

Even in our lives, He desires that those things which keep us off-kilter and off focus would fall away so that we can refocus on the most important thing—fellowship with Him!

Because when God, Himself is our focus, we will not fall off into the ditch or ravine, and everything else will fall into place.

“But [continually]seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be [provided]added to you” (Matt 6:33).

Develop Skills to Keep Focused on Your Purpose in God

  • Take five minutes out of your day—in the middle of other things you are doing—to think on Him. Think of His goodness and mercy to you. Reflect on His love.
  • Put a reminder in your phone app to remind you to set your mind on things above—on Jesus! Say a small prayer of love to your Beloved.
  • Put a rubber band on your wrist to remind you to stop for a minute and think on Him throughout the day. Breathe out all frustrations and breathe in His Spirit. Try to notice His presence with you.
  • Make a habit to think your last thoughts before sleep and the first thoughts when waking about Christ. Ask for His help and trust His goodness is coming to you.

“Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth” (Col 3:2).

  1. This is so true. We are simply pilgrims here on Earth, traveling through life. There is something the Lord wants each of us to do while we are on this earth. We discover our calling after we have been obedient and faithful in whatever tasks, steps, and actions the Lord Gives us over the years.
